IMPEACHMENT: PRO-SARAKI SENATORS STORM NASS, BREAK SECURITY BARRICADES

Update:

PRO-SARAKI SENATORS ALLOWED INTO NASS AFTER INITIAL REFUSAL BY DSS, POLICE

* Illegality will never stand - Sen. Bruce

NEWSMAN - Senators loyal to Senate President Bukola Saraki and Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu have finally been allowed to gain entry into the National Assembly complex after initially being prevented from entering there by security agents.

Officers of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Police had earlier turned back the Senators claiming to be acting on orders from above but without disclosing who issued the purported order.

Senator Ben Murray Bruce in his reaction to the development kicked against what he termed as an "illegality" by higher authorities, in a tweet.

Senator Bruce who joined other senators in a series of photographs to portray to the world the solidarity of senators, especially of the Peoples Democratic Party, said:

"We will forever defend this hard fought democracy. Illegality will never stand! We are now in the complex but are yet to get access to the chambers as staff of the National Assembly incharge of this have been blocked from entry. #SaveOurDemocracy"

Some House of Representatives members also showed up at the entrance to the Senate Chamber to show their solidarity against what many of them alleged were plans to impeach Saraki and Ekweremadu.

UPDATED: POLICE LAY SIEGE ON SARAKI, EKWEREMADU RESIDENCE... FULL DETAILS

* Siege meant to stop Presiding Officers from Senate Chambers over planned mass defection

NEWSMAN, Abuja - Senate President Bukola Saraki's political aide Bamikole Omisore says the police have blocked his principal from leaving his Abuja residence this morning after laying siege on his convoy.

Also prevented from leaving his Apo residence in Abuja is Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.

Omisore in a tweet said:

"The @PoliceNG have blocked the Senate President @BukolaSaraki's convoy at Lake chad junction on his way to report to the police headquarters upon the last night invitation by the police received at 8pm"

In the same vein, National Publicity Secretary of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kola Ologbondiyan also tweeted that  Ekweremadu had been prevented by security operatives from leaving his Apo residence in Abuja.

"Breaking..... Security operatives takeover the Apo, Abuja, residence of Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu...#Underthejackboots"

"Security operatives block Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu,'s residence in Apo, Abuja... Senate President Bukola Saraki already invited by the Police by 8am... Is this a democracy?"

Sources say the presiding officers will not be allowed to gain entry to the Senate chambers today and likely this week by certain interests in government so as to prevent a mass defection of aggrieved senators especially of the splinter R-APC who may want to defect to PDP and other political parties before the National Assembly goes on its annual recess this week.

The aggrieved lawmakers are also working hard to defect on time so as to meet up with the INEC calendar on primaries, while in their new political parties.

Following an emergency invitation to appear before the police at 8am this morning, Saraki had last night in a statement signed by his media aide, Yusuph Olaniyonu stated that:

"This plot aimed at compelling me and my associates to stay in a party where members are criminalised without just cause, where injustice is perpetrated at the highest level and where there is no respect for constitutionalism is an exercise in futility and it will fail.

"Once again, my confidence in God and our judicial system remains intact and unshaken. The truth shall also prevail in this case."

It is unclear if the siege on the presiding officers of the Senate is sanctioned by President Muhammadu Buhari who has in the past few days met with groups of aggrieved lawmakers, including Saraki, to renegotiate their stay in the ruling All Progressives Congress rather than defecting elsewhere.

He last night met with another group of senators led by Kano senator, Rabiu Kwankwaso.
